Who is Rana?

My name is Rana, and I am from Jeddah which is located on the west coast of Saudi Arabia. For me, Jeddah means happiness, piece, and family. Now, I am studying English here in the US, and next semester I will start my master's in Finance. I live here with two of my sibling, so I do not feel lonely because of them. However I miss my home country, I enjoy living here. I love the idea of making a friendships with people from different countries. I can tell that the advantage of living here outweigh the downside because here I learned how to be independence and how to face obstacles.

Blog 4 Questions: Thoughts on society and The Giver

In what ways do we perceive memories in our society?
memories are the link between the past and the future, and all of us have happy and sad
memories. we smile when we remember any the happy memories, and learn lessons from
the bad one. in addition, it can be seen that memories have a good effect in building our
personality because beautiful memories  motive us up to see the beauty of this world.
on the other hand, we always try to forget bad memories because They cause us depression
as soon as we think about it.

What do you think would be different in the world if we had only one-generation memories?
with one-generation memories, life would be boring and not interesting. all generations
will have the same memories, so there will be no value for memories. in addition to that,
all generation will do the same mistakes over and over because they are sticking in the same memories.

The best lesson my grandparent (or parent or any relative) ever taught me was..

Please complete this idea with two paragraphs.  Include a reference to an outside source:

The best lesson my grandparent (or parent or any relative) ever taught me was..

Experiences in life is the second source of learning. We can learn from our parents many things that schools do not teach it to us. For me, my parents taught me that being positive is important because positivity leads to success and beautiful life.

My parents taught me to think about all the positive things that are happening especially when i face lot of pressure because of my study or other things. For example, when I have exams and I feel I am under stress, I try ti think about the good things that I have in my life to get out myself from the pessimism and depression. Some examples of positive things to focus on when you think there is nothing are: you woke up this morning, you can breath, you can see, you can smell, you can taste.

In addition to that, my parents taught me that being positive leads to success. To illustrate, when I feel that I am under lots of pressure because of my study, I try to think that I am capable of finish everything on time by arranging my time and making a scandal. I can tell that this works with me because I try to focus on the strength side of me. Kendra cherry said, "Even if positive thinking does not come naturally to you, there are plenty of great reasons to start cultivating affirmative thoughts and minimizing negative self-talk."

To sum up, lessons that be taught by our parents and grandparents are a lot. One of those lessons was taught by my parents is how positivity is important in our lives. I learned from them that being positive makes my life beautiful and leads to success.

Blog Three: Stretching Your Positive Mind

Blog Three: Stretching Your Positive Mind
Stretching your mind to see different perspectives on the same situation helps us to be smarter, happier and live, longer (Sean Achor, 2013-see Ted Talk and books)

Watch this Ted Talk: http://www.ted.com/talks/shawn_achor_the_happy_secret_to_better_work.html

Then complete the following exercise.

1.)  Write about your life now as a student at MEI in all negative descriptions.  Write only facts.  Do not make up information.  Write only negative facts.  Write a complete paragraph.  Include ALL the details about your life at MEI.  Include as many details as you can, make them all negative, include as much as possible.

2.)  Write about your life now at as a student  MEI in all positive descriptions. Write about the same subject but write only facts, and write only positive statements.  Include as many details as you can, make them all positive, include as much as possible.
In terms of the positive side at MEI, making friends is easy because you can see that most students are interested to know about each other, and to discover about our cultures. Also, the English program here is really good and strong, and I feel that my English is improved day after day. Also, everybody is care about each individual student, and if he/she needs any help. I can tell that the environment here is comfortable, so each student feels like if he in a school in his country.

3.) Stretch: Write about the same subject using completely different information. Do not repeat ANY of the previous information.  It can be negative or positive.
One of the negative part at MEI is classes because some of them are really bad and not comfortable. You can either get sweat or listen to the noisy sound of the AC.
On the other hand, the speaking partner one of favorite things here. We can make a friendship with people who are actually studying at UMD. so we have fun an practice English with them. Also, I still meet some of them who were my partners in a previous semesters.

Do You Like Being Alone?

Nowadays, it can be clearly seen the huge number of people who prefer living alone. Some people agree that is living makes people more interactive in the society. In my opinion, I have two perspectives.

First of all, each person needs to be alone sometimes. For instance, when I feel upset for any reason, I like to be alone. In addition, being alone is essential for me when I want to think clearly about any problem I face. For me, my bedroom is my small world  that I escape to it when I feel that I do not want to talk to people.

On the other hand, living alone makes people less social because they used to not share anything with anybody at home such as cooking, eating, and watching TV. (2013) refers to the bad effect of living alone on the health "This indicates that the real danger of living alone is not feeling lonely per se, but having reduced contact with others." So, they feel weariness when they communicate with people  for a long time. For example, one of my friend who lives alone likes to spend her time alone rather than spend it with friends.

Finally, I think moderation is the key here to  keep balance and allow us to live in a harmony. To illustrate, I live with my family, but I can be alone when I want at the same time. Moreover, they respect me when I tell them that I need to be alone to rearrange my thoughts.

To sum up, people argue about if being alone is a good idea or not. I think escaping from people is important sometimes, but this does not mean that we have to live alone. So, moderation is important to have social life and private space.

Journal: A Perfect World

Journal Entry:

Describe your idea of a perfect world. Include as many details as you can think of.
Living in a perfect world is like a dream because we can not imagine that all people will have a perfect life. In addition to that, I think all people will want to have a long life in that time. Today, with all these wars and political issues, most of the countries are in a non stable situation. people are suffering from hunger and poverty, and no one care about them. Moreover, lots of poor countries lack of good schools and hospitals. As we can see also, the polluted environment that we live in, so lots of people get sick due to this problem.
on the other hand, when we think about the perfect world, Peace is the word that comes to our minds, so crimes and wars will not exist any more, so all people would have the right to  live without the feel of fear. I think equality would be also exist between countries and people. For instance, there will be no rich and poor countries, so all countries would have good schools and hospitals. Also, all people will be at the same level in the society. in addition, we will have fresh air everywhere because of the clean environment, so the number of diseases that related to the pollution will be decrease. Lori (2013) says "In a perfect world there would be no birth defects, no injury, no illness, no aging and no death. There would be no power struggles, no ego struggles and no struggles for survival. There would be universal love and kindness and brotherhood – a perfect community."

To sum up, the perfect world is like a dream we can not imagine it. If the  peace is dominating the world, this means no wars, hunger and poverty. So, each person would have his own perfect life.
